PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for motor assessors and learners who reconstruct collisions for the RAF and as evidence in criminal proceedings in order to decide on the probable circumstances of a collision.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Interpreting information elated to a collision.
  • Explaining the procedure followed to produce the required evidence.
  • Identifying photographs required to interpret the circumstances of a collision.
  • Producing relevant photographic evidence of a collision.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is:
  • Documents and other information include, but are not limited to, worn statements, claim forms, accident reports, eyewitness accounts, diagrams, sketches and verbal interviews.
  • Photographic evidence includes, but is not limited to, tyre marks, road scars, liquid spillage, dribble marks, land marks, damage to a fixed object, direction of travel, road layout and debris.
  • Vehicles as defined in the National Road Traffic Act.

    Interpret information related to a collision. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Documents and other information relating to a collision are interpreted to create a mental picture of the event. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Assumptions are made about the location of damage on a vehicle and at the scene based on the mental picture. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A decision is made about the evidence that will probably be required in a specific situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Appropriate equipment is selected to produce the required evidence. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain the procedure that is followed in creating basic photographic evidence. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The basic photographs required in an investigation are described with reference to the number of photographs required and the angle of each. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Photographs that are required to identify a vehicle are described in a specific situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Physical evidence in the vehicle or at the scene is identified and photographed in order to record the damage and marks on a road. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Procedures and techniques required to take photographs are explained with reference to lighting, focus, depth of field and equipment. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Identify photographs required to interpret the circumstances of a collision.

    The importance of creating labels in photographs where necessary is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Marks at the scene are linked to damage to a vehicle or parts of a vehicle to identify possible cause and effect. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Additional photographs to interpret the circumstances of a collision and confirm evidence are identified for a specific situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Precautions required at a specific collision scene are explained with reference to the safety of the photographer.

    Produce relevant photographic evidence of a collision.

    Appropriate terminology is used to explain what different photographs illustrate about a collision. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Photographs are produced as evidence of the scene and the collision. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Photographs are produced as evidence of contact damage, induced damage, pre-collision damage, interior contact damage, and tyre damage.
