PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for intermediaries, underwriters, claim assessors, risk managers and intermediaries who sell agricultural insurance.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Differentiating between agricultural crop insurance and other short term insurance.
  • Investigating factors that impact on a premium in a selected area.
  • Explaining the basic cover for hail.
  • Analysing the cover in multi peril crop insurance. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is:
  • Premium differs on insured perils, defined perils, excess structures and claim premium ratios.
  • Policy options in hail cover include franchise, excess per land and excess per farm(s).

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Differentiate between agricultural crop insurance and other short term insurance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The difference between a term policy and contract policy is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The insurance of a specific crop is explained and an indication is given of when a farmer may decide to increase the insurance on a specific crop. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The terms and conditions of an agricultural crop policy are compared to the terms and conditions of a short term policy in terms of the insured, insured value, payment of premium and cancellation of the policy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of incorrect advice are explained with reference to the farmer, the learner and the insurer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The application of VAT in crop insurance is explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Investigate factors that impact on premium in a selected area.

    The concept of claim ratio is explained for a specific crop.

    The implications of the Magisterial District and homogeneous micro climate farming region on premium are explained with examples.

    The concept of excess in agricultural insurance is explained with reference to land and farm policies and the implications for premium. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Reasons why premium differs on different cover options are explained with examples.

    Explain the basic cover for hail.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A hail policy wording is analysed to determine the cover with reference to inceptions and exceptions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Consequential damage associated with hail is explained for different crops. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Defined perils are analysed in a specific hail policy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The concepts of insurable stage, commencement of cover and related delay clauses are explained with reference to anti-selection. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Policy options in hail cover are analysed in terms of different excess structures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The consequences of over and under insurance are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Determination of damage is explained in terms of percentage of damage. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Analyse the cover in a multi peril crop insurance policy.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Additional perils insured under a multi peril crop policy are analysed with reference to weather related or unmanageable perils. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The differences in inception cover under hail and multi peril policies are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Determination of damage is explained with reference to qualitative and quantitative loss of yield.

  • Anyone assessing a candidate against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
