PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Qualifying learners will understand the need for and the value of volunteerism in South Africa and will be able to implement strategies to recruit, select and train volunteers. Qualifying learners will be able to assist management in the co-ordination of volunteer projects.

This Unit Standard will provide the qualifying learner with the competence to apply basic managerial skills with regard to volunteers. In addition, they will be well positioned to extend their learning and practice into other areas or to strive towards professional standards and practices at higher levels.

Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Explaining the value of volunteerism and describing the potential roles of volunteers in various contexts
  • Recruiting, selecting and appointing volunteers
  • Inducting and training volunteers
  • Managing volunteers
  • Co-ordinating volunteer supervision and mentoring 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF level 3 or equivalent competence.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 3 or equivalent competence.

These may include regular clinical supervision, emphasising the personal responsibility for self care and participation in "care for the care-giver" programmes, etc.

    Range of core concepts in volunteering includes, but is not limited to: position of volunteers versus paid staff, recruitment, selection, induction, recognition, incentives, volunteer policy, contract, stipend, exploitation, etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The nature and motives of volunteering in South Africa is compared with international trends using examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The benefits and risks associated with volunteer programmes is illustrated with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Range of benefits includes, but is not limited to: cost effective but not free, intrinsic motivation, positive attitude, passionate about the cause, etc.

    The criteria for the recruitment of volunteers, based on a specific job description or identified need, is developed in accordance with organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Potential sources of volunteer recruitment are listed and methods of recruitment specified as practiced in the sector. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of methods of recruitment includes, but is not limited to: editorial/adverts in print and radio media, presentation at schools, colleges, churches, etc.

    Selection criteria for volunteers for suitable positions is explained according to the organisational policy and procedures.

    Procedures for the appointment of volunteers is described according the organisational volunteer policy.

    Range of procedures include, but is not limited to: working agreements, codes of conduct, orientation of the volunteer, probation periods, etc.

    An orientation programme for volunteers is developed according to the organisational volunteer policy.

    Initial training needs are assessed based on the requirements of the position and the level of skills and knowledge of the volunteer according to organisational requirements.

    A programme for the basic and ongoing training of volunteers is developed according to organisational practice.

    Personal qualities and skills required of a volunteer manager are described using examples.

    The responsibility of the volunteer manager to minimise the risks associated with volunteer activities are identified and explained using examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Procedures to monitor and evaluate volunteer projects and activities are explained according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The components of a volunteer retention strategy are outlined using a suitable case study.

    Ways to motivate and reward volunteers are explained using examples.

    Grievance procedures for non-delivery on the part of the organisation and the volunteers are described according to organisational policy and procedures.

    The relationship between volunteer turnover, burnout and vicarious traumatisation are explained using examples.

    The value of self care strategies for volunteers is described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of ongoing supervision and mentoring of volunteers is explained using examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of reasons for the importance of ongoing supervision and mentoring of volunteers includes, but is not limited to: Service providers and volunteers in the helping/care giving sector are at risk of burnout, over emotional involvement, stress, vicarious traumatisation and as a result may contribute to secondary victimisation of their clients. Systems should therefore be developed to prevent or reduce these risks. These may include regular clinical supervision, emphasising the personal responsibility for self care and participation in "care for the care-giver" programmes, etc.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Moderation
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant ETQA or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant band or sector ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in this Unit Standard as well as the integrated competence described in the Exit Level Outcome of the Qualification.
