PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner is capable of:

Identifying the situation that requires protection and affording appropriate on-track protection in order to contribute to safety of people, trains and machinery and for safe movement on rail. The learner will also be able to discontinue protection in accordance with company procedures and will be able to collect, transport, use and secure protection equipment in accordance with safety standards and relevant procedures.

This Unit Standard will contribute to the full development of a professional community of Rail Construction and Maintenance workers.

The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this Unit Standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the Rail Construction and Maintenance environment. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that learners are already competent in the following:
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1
  • Communication at NQF Level 1

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard:

    Competency must be demonstrated
  • In different weather and environmental conditions.
  • Day and night time.
  • In different yard layouts/mainline/sidings/private sidings/shed/workshop (might or might not include overhead traction and Railway signalling).
  • Within a specific time span.
  • Different site conditions, e.g. cutting, embankments, multiple lines, tunnels, sites with restricted accessibility etc.

    Types of protection include protection of trains and safeguarding of employees, viz:
  • Warnings.
  • Speed reduction.
  • Stop approaching traffic.

    This standard is inclusive of:
  • Occupation of lines.
  • Train accidents, obstructions on the line, maintenance work on the track/high voltage, etc.
  • Level crossings (unprotected).
  • On-track machinery.

    Equipment in this standard can include, but not limited to be:
  • Detonators.
  • Flags.
  • Banners.
  • Boards.
  • Hand-lamps.
  • Warning devices.
