PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners who are required to apply geographical knowledge and skill in authentic situations. It will enable learners to understand regional spatial changes that are a result of climate change. It should enable people in business and industry to interpret expert reports and explain trends in a specific sector that could be attributed to climate change and to participate in informed debate on the matter. It will be useful for learners in Trade Unions, and management including learners in Local Government and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) who are responsible for implementing change. It may be useful for learners in logistics and procurement, insurance, agriculture and wholesale and retail industries where activities may be affected by climate change.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the nature of climate change.
  • Identifying the causes of climate change.
  • Describing the effects of climate change and the impact on spatial relations.
  • Applying knowledge of climate change to specific sectors or industry.

    Explain the nature of climate change.

    The concept of climate change is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Climatic records are interpreted to describe trends and variability. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Records include, but are not limited to, sea surface temperatures, rising sea levels, global atmospheric temperatures and retreating glaciers.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The role of El Nino and La Nina in medium term climate change is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Ozone depletion is explained with reference to long-term climate change. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Global warming is explained with reference to long-term climate change. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify the causes of climate change. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Evidence of the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, thermal pollution, consumerism and emissions from waste are used to explain climate change. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Natural events that can contribute to short and medium term climate change are identified with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Values and attitudes of society that can contribute to short and medium term climate change are identified with reference to South Africa, Africa and the global situation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Values and attitudes include, but are not limited to, greed, attitude to non-renewable resources and ignorance.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Describe the effects of climate change and the impact on spatial relations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The positive and negative consequences of climate change are analysed for selected regions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Consequences include, but are not limited to, change in agricultural conditions, poverty, migration, food and water insecurity.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The possible effects of changes in sea surface temperatures are explained with reference to rainfall patterns, storm frequency and fish stocks. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The possible effects of rising sea levels are explained with reference to coastal areas, ports, recreation and travel and tourism. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The possible effects of changes in global atmospheric temperatures are explained with reference to crop distribution, health risks, agricultural production, soil moisture, water supply, expansion of the sea and the distribution of endemic diseases. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The effects of retreating glacial ice are explained with reference to rising sea levels, tourism, transport routes, recreational activities and icebergs in the oceans.

    Apply knowledge of climate change to specific sectors or industry.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    International conventions and protocols related to climate change are identified and an indication is given of how South African legislation supports these protocols and conventions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Risks associated with climate change are investigated for specific areas, sectors or industry. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A strategy to minimise the potential risk is proposed for selected areas, organisations, sectors or industry. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The impact of climate change on world trade is explored with reference to changing biomes, transport along major inland waterways, trade and travel.

  • Assessors for this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the appropriate ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the appropriate ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the appropriate ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.
