This unit standard is intended for persons who manage shore based fishing operations.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of fishing operations and catching methods.
  • Identify and resolve fishing problems that may have occurred at sea.
  • Prepare holds and related resources for catch.
  • Demonstrate and understanding of product fish processing to related product standards.
  • Evaluate outcomes of fishing processes conducted at sea.

    The managing of fishing operations includes but is not limited to the following in terms of quality, quantity and types relating to products such as but not limited to these: tuna, lobster, prawns.

  • Prepare holds and related resources for catch.
  • Demonstrate and understanding of product fish processing to related product standards.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of fishing operations and catching methods. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Catching methods may include but are not limited trawling, long lining, purse seining, traps, poling. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Fishing methods, operations and techniques are identified and explained using examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Specifications of fishing gear are explained as per defined legislation relevant to sector. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Bait types and quantities are identified and calculated per voyage as per defined company procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Target species and by catch are identified and differences explained as per legislation.

    Identify and resolve fishing problems that may have occurred at sea.

    Preserving methods are explained for the various catch types. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Quantities of ice, bins and packing material are calculated as per expected catch rate and vessel capacity.

    Cleaning methods are explained as per company-defined standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Cleaning methods may include but not limited to wash, sanitising, and removal of debris.

    Demonstrate and understanding of product fish processing to related product standards.
