PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for persons who will be involved in shore-based fishing operations where they will be responsible for the provision of weather information to crew on the vessels at sea so as to ensure crew safety.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and analyse, different weather activities and their related implications.
  • Access and analyse weather information.
  • Provide information relevant to weather forecasts.

    It is assumed that learners are already competent in the following:

    This unit standard applies to the knowledge and understanding of weather information as it relates to wind, temperature, pressures, currents and swells.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Wave climatology around the South African coastline is explained as per defined metrological requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Weather activities are identified and explained as per defined metrological maritime/fishing criteria. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Wind, temperature, pressures, currents, swells.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Sources of weather conditions are identified and the defined metrological information passed on to the vessels.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Sources to access weather information within the South African environment are identified. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Sources:- TV, Newspapers, Internet, Maritime Radio, Commercial Radio, Weather Fax, Radiofax, SAWS - South African Weather Services, Navtex and synoptic charts such as the 5 -day forecast that is broadcast on radiofax.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Weather information is accessed to determine the impact on the relevant maritime fishing operations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Wind speeds and direction, swell size, sea surface temperatures visibility, and moon phases.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Accessed weather information is analysed and interpreted for the short term (24 hours) and long term (5 days) as per the maritime/fishing operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Forecasts are factored into the fishing action plan according to the safety and company requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Long term forecasts and plans are revised and updated with feedback to role-players to defined company requirements.

    Short term and long term forecasts are communicated to vessels using the defined company procedure.

    Fishing plans are revised and managed according to changing weather conditions in compliance with safety and company requirements.
