PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners completing this unit standard will be competent in marking off various shapes on flat surfaces using templates for the purposes of installing components. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication at ABET Level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy at ABET Level 3. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The range of marking off applications includes flat shapes.
  • Materials include but are not limited to aluminium, plastics, metals, wood and paper.
  • Marking off equipment includes but not limited to pencils, chalk, scriber, centre punches, dividers, rulers, tape measures, callipers and spirit levels.
  • Cutting includes but is not limited to using saws, jigsaw, drilling machine, trimming knife and scissors.

    Plan and prepare materials and equipment for marking off.

    Job instructions are interpreted. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Templates, marking off equipment and correct personal protective equipment are selected to meet the requirements of the task instructions.

    Marking off equipment is examined for defects.

    Worksite is identified according to the job instructions.

    Surface for cutting is prepared according to workplace procedures.

    Shape is cut out using appropriate tool and /or equipment according to properties of material.

    Shape is checked against the template and job instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Shape off is finished using the appropriate tools.

    Correct personal protective equipment and safety procedures and standards are adhered to.

    Apply quality checks on completed work and store tools, equipment and templates.
