  • People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard.
  • The learner is capable of preparing a vehicle and to assess the damage and repair a minor dent on a vehicle part with easy access.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Mathematical Literacy and Communication at NQF Level 1 and the unit standards
  • Select, use and care for engineering power and hand tools
  • Understand the construction and safety restraint systems of a vehicle
  • Identify the different types of materials and their properties used in the vehicle construction
  • Remove, replace and align body parts

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The ranges as indicated under the specific outcomes determine the scope and level of this unit standard.
  • All work is performed under constant supervision and according to workplace and workshop manual specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare the vehicle and assess the damaged part. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Prepare includes moving the vehicle to the demarcated area, cleaning and dewaxing the damaged area, perform safety precautionary measures, safe lifting of the vehicle where required and fitting all protection covers.
  • Assessing the damaged part includes conducting a visual inspection, determining the stripping requirements, determining the accessibility of the damaged part, reading and interpreting the job instructions and determining the safety precautionary measures.
  • Damaged part includes only parts with easy access.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The vehicle is prepared in accordance with the job and workplace requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All the appropriate procedures are followed and explanations given when the damage, the repair process and safety precautionary measures are determined. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Appropriate literature is referred to when explanations are given. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Determine the repair process of the damaged part. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Determine the repair process includes the identification of the tools and equipment and if it is an on car or off car repair process.
  • Tools and equipment includes basic ABR tools, lift and/or trestles and the appropriate grit abrasive.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The repair process is determined and explained in accordance with the workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All the tools and equipment to be used for the repairs are identified correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The tools and equipment are used and applied correctly. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Repair the damaged part while maintaining safe working practises. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Repair includes cleaning, shaping, metal filing, body filling, sanding, stripping, assembling and finishing of the part.
  • Safe working practises include the safe storage of removed parts.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The damaged part is repaired following the appropriate repair procedures in accordance with the job requirement and workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The appropriate tools and equipment are used as required by the repair process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safe working practises are explained and demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An understanding of SHE procedures is demonstrated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Perform a quality evaluation of the repaired part. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Quality evaluation includes a visual and physical inspection of the repaired part.

    The repaired part is evaluated and defects are identified in accordance with specifications.

    Explanations are given clearly with appropriate examples.

    Deliver the repairs and restore the work area.

  • Deliver repairs include to the relevant department and the completion of the required documentation.
  • Restore the work area includes cleaning the work area and clean and store the tools and equipment.
