PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of taking fluid samples using specific sampling methods, procedures and equipment. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that the learner has already learned the use of engineering hand tools, power tools and to maintain a safe and productive working environment.

The ranges as indicated under the specific outcomes determine the scope and level of this unit standard. All work is performed under the supervision and according to workplace and workshop manual specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
Learner has learned to Plan and prepare for fluid sampling. 
OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Planning includes obtaining sample tubes, tube cutter, sample pump and bottles and appropriate tools.
  • Preparing includes normalising automotive system/s and cleaning areas where samples will be taken.
  • Automotive system/s could be one or more of: fuel, cooling, hydraulic, engine, drive train.
