PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Assess the readiness of plants for planting
  • Place plants at the appropriate spacings
  • Remove plants from containers and plant at the correct depth
  • Give appropriate care to new plants

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    "Containers" include seedling trays, plug trays, pots, and plastic bags 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Select plants from stockholding or the nursery and prepare for planting. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: Plants include seedlings, herbaceous perennials, shrubs, trees, size and condition of plants, properly developed root ball, container growing, medium saturated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The criteria to be used when selecting plants for planting out is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons for soaking plants before planting are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The attainment of the correct moisture content of the growing media for planting is demonstrated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Arrange plants in the areas where they are to be planted. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: Spacing of common annual and perennial plants, degree of coverage required, spread of mature plant.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The factors that influence the planting density of various plant types are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The appropriate spacing for common annual seedlings is demonstrated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Prepare a suitable hole to receive the plant. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: Extent of mature root development, digging and planting tools, retain topsoil, soil friability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The proper use of and care of tools is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The preparation of a suitable hole for the plant is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The procedures for the enrichment of the base and backfill material for planting, are demonstrated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Remove the plant from its container and place it in the hole at the correct level. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: seedling tray, plug tray, pot, plastic bag, maintain soil level at stems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct method of removing the plant from the container is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct method of handling the plant when planting is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of planting at the correct level is explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Backfill and complete planting. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The necessity of keeping the plant vertical when backfilling is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct backfilling around the plant, to prevent the burying of its leaves and branches, is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The 'firming' of the soil around the root ball is demonstrated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Prepare bedding area and plant annuals. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: common annuals found in the workplace, tilling, rotavating, compost, manure, fertilizers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The tilling and addition of soil enrichments to the bedding area is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct spacing and the hollowing out of the holes for the annuals is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The placing of an annual and the 'firming' of the soil around it, is demonstrated. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    The assessment of qualifying learners against this standard should meet the requirements of established principles. Practical assessment activities will be used, which are appropriate to the contents in which qualifying learners are working. These activities will include an appropriate combination of self and peer assessment, practical and oral assessments, observations etc.

    The assessment should ensure that all the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge be assessed. The specific outcomes must be assessed in its own right, through oral and practical evidence. It cannot be assessed by observation.

    The specific outcomes and essential knowledge must be assessed in relation to each other. If a qualifying learner is able to explain the essential embedded knowledge, but is unable to perform the specific outcomes, then they should not be assessed as competent. Similarly, if a learner is able to perform specific outcomes, but is unable to explain or justify their performance in terms of the essential embedded knowledge, they should not be assessed as competent.

    Evidence of the specified critical cross-field outcomes should be found, both in performance and in the essential embedded knowledge.

    Performance of specific outcomes must actively affirm target groups of qualifying learners, not unfairly discriminate against them. Qualifying learners should be able to justify their performance in terms of these values.

    Embedded knowledge is reflected within the assessment criteria of each specific Outcome and must be assessed in its own right, through oral and written evidence. Observation cannot be the only assessment.
