PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons who are required to provide basic information about Anti-Retroviral Treatment (ART) to community members of similar cultural background and mother tongue, and to facilitate treatment compliance for the person who is receiving the treatment.

People credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate a fundamental knowledge of ARVs and their role in HIV and AIDS
  • Explain the psychosocial and cultural factors that have an effect on the person who receives ART, the family and the community
  • Explain the factors that promote the success of ART
  • Facilitate local support systems for the people who are receiving ART

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard applies to persons involved in Anti-Retroviral (ARV) programmes working as part of a multi-disciplinary team under the supervision of a professional health worker. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate a fundamental knowledge of ARVs and their role in HIV and AIDS.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    ARVs are explained as a combination of medicines that limit the replication of the HI Virus. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The implications of treatment are explained in terms of its being a life-long programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    ART is explained in terms of the benefits of adherence and consequences of non-adherence to the treatment plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Side effects of ART are recognised in terms of their signs, symptoms and severity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Knowledge of side effects is explained in terms of referral procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The importance of continuation of treatment, recognition of danger signs, referral mechanisms.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The role of ART in boosting the immune system is explained in terms of the way in which the medicine allows the immune system to recover.

    The link between treatment non-compliance and drug resistance is explained in terms of the risks to the patient.

    Explain the psychosocial and cultural factors that have an effect on the person who receives ART, the family and the community.

    Ways in which stress can be reduced are described as means to boost the immune system.

    The need for support from family and friends is explained in terms of motivation and adherence to treatment. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Facilitate local support systems for the people who are receiving ART.

    ART support systems are explained in terms of functions and responsibilities.

    Support systems include counsellors, team members, community resources and the treatment centre.

    Family and community awareness programmes are conducted in accordance with the identified needs.

    Local community support groups for people who are receiving ART are identified in terms of their ability to support, help and motivate the client.

  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA or with an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
