PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable a health worker to inform the community about Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and promote early detection and treatment of STIs. The health worker should be familiar with the community and be able to communicate effectively in the languages spoken by the community and in a manner that is sensitive to the culture and norms of the community. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Communication at ABET level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy at ABET level 3.
  • Knowledge of a community and diseases common to the community.
  • Knowledge of the community and the ability to communicate effectively within their cultural context.

  • "Apply accurate information about HIV & AIDS to everyday life" (NLRD ID 116999).
  • "Demonstrate an understanding of sexuality and sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS" (NLRD ID 14656).

    Basic knowledge about STIs, the signs, symptoms and treatment within the context of the learner's everyday environment.

    Prepare STI-related learning activities for a target audience in a community.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Target groups within the community are identified in terms of risk of exposure to STIs. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Children, youth, women, men, mobile communities, sex workers, men having sex with men.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Learning activities are prepared in accordance with the requirements of the target audience. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) in a manner that is appropriate to the target audience.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different types of STIs are identified and described in terms of their signs and symptoms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The complications of untreated STIs are explained in terms of the effect on the infected person. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Infertility, partner strife, premature birth, complications in the newborn and general paralysis of the insane.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of adherence to treatment by the infected person and sexual partner/s is explained in terms of reduced risk of re-infection and complications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The link between untreated STIs and Human Immuno Virus (HIV) is explained in terms of the increased risk of contracting HIV. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Vulnerability of contracting STIs is explained in terms of gender and sexual orientation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Explanations are given in accordance with cultural sensitivity, age and language of the target audience. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Referral procedures and facilities are identified in terms of contact details and applicability to specified circumstances.

    Safe sexual behaviour is explained in terms of its importance in preventing infections. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Abstinence and alternative practices, partner reduction, delayed first sexual intercourse, use of condoms.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The use of both male and female condoms is described and demonstrated in terms of best practice requirements and/or manufacturer instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Sexual behaviour is explained in terms of life skills that help to reduce the risk of infection. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Assertive communication, negotiation and decision-making.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The use of Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is explained in terms of reducing the risk of infection after exposure.

    Includes forced or coerced sexual encounters.
