PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner credited with this unit standard will be able to manage and coordinate the movement and volumes of multi-product throughout the pipeline network in accordance with company-specific policies, procedures and instructions by operating and monitoring pipeline equipment safely and timeously, thereby ensuring the timeous, safe and continuous operation of the pipelines by transporting petroleum products efficiently, thus contributing positively to the Southern African economy.

This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the pipeline operations.

The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the Pipeline Transport environment.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard includes the utilisation of high- and low-pressure manifolds.

    This unit standard includes the remote operation of pipeline equipment via a tele-control system or verbal instruction via any other communication system. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Calculate the movement of product volumes through the pipeline network correctly, accurately and timeously.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Product heads, slug volumes and delivery/intake times are calculated correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Start/stop times of line displacements are calculated correctly and relevant role players are advised timeously. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Intake/delivery volumes in the event of meter failures are calculated, adjusted and recorded correctly and relevant role players are advised timeously.

    Sub-standard conditions are identified, reacted to, recorded and reported to the relevant role players timeously. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Deliveries versus intake volume comparisons (outages) are calculated correctly to identify volume losses, possible pipeline leaks and meter inaccuracies.

    Calculator is utilised correctly.

    Relevant information related to the product movement and volumes is communicated and confirmed correctly and timeously with relevant role players as per company operations procedures, policies and instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Operations notices in conjunction with product shipment programs are checked, verified for accuracy and discrepancies reported. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Communication systems are used correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The identified sub standard conditions are communicated, reported and recorded timeously to relevant role players using available systems according to company instructions.

    Operations notices, operations log-sheets, slug volumes, times and product heads are amended and relevant role players advised of amendments according to company operations procedures, policies and instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Meter failure and /or meter outages is queried, recorded and reported according to company operations instructions 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Use company-specific systems/software to coordinate and control the movement of specific product volumes according to the operations notices and company-specific operations procedures, policies and instructions.

    Sub-standard conditions are identified, reacted to, recorded and reported to the relevant role players timeously according to company-specific instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Alarms are interpreted correctly and reacted to timeously (e.g. sump tank, pumps sets, pressures, routing, etc.).

    Safely and efficiently manage, coordinate and accurately control the volumes, intakes, deliveries, losses and gains of the product throughout the pipeline network.
