PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This learner will be able to perform plastering functions listed in this unit standard under supervision.

The qualifying learner is capable of:

Identifying and using plastering / screeding tools, materials and protective equipment, preparing surfaces for plastering, applying plaster to surfaces and applying screeds to concrete floors.

These learning outcomes form part of the Elective learning in the "National Certificate in Construction".

This unit standard will contribute to the development of more professional construction workers.

The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the construction environment. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
The following knowledge, skills attitude and / or equivalent:

ABET Level 4 or NQF Level 1 English literacy and numeracy. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Materials include but are not limited to: Sand, cementitious materials, lime, bonding agents, additives and water.
  • Surfaces include but are not limited to: Entire walls, floors, beams, columns, door and window openings.
  • Protruding objects or contaminating agents are removed, scraped or chipped.
  • Tools include but are not limited to: Steel, wood floats, trowels, wheelbarrows, buckets, mortar boards, hammers, spirit levels, plumb bobs, squares, screeding bar, and nylon line.
  • Internal and external corners are to be banished with the relevant internal or external corner tools.
  • Walls include but are not limited to: Straight, vertical and inclined surfaces.
  • Columns include only square surfaces.
  • Plastered surfaces are to be wood and steel float finished.
  • All completed surfaces to be straight and even i.e. free of bumps or hollows and free of tool marks.
  • Internal angles to floors and ceilings to be finished off clean and sharp.
  • Plaster finishes include but are not limited to: Smooth, scratch and splatter types.
  • Methods of curing surfaces include but are not limited to: Water or curing membrane.
  • Float finishes include but are not limited to: Steel and wood float finishes.

    Plastering / screeding tools are used and maintained in accordance with Health and Safety and housekeeping procedures.

    Types of protective equipment are listed and their purpose explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Types of plastering materials are listed and their properties and application described. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare surfaces for plastering. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An appropriate area is identified for batching of plaster, with due regard to proximity and transport to work area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Protrusions are removed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Surface defects and cracks are identified and corrected. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Levels and lines are corrected to be true and plumb. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Existing surfaces and built-in items are identified and protected against damage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Dust and dirt are removed and surfaces are dampened where necessary. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Plaster, screeds and grano mixes are batched according to instructions and specific work requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Apply plaster to surfaces. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Plaster screed is applied to entire wall and column surfaces, according to line, level and specification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Horizontal and vertical "V" joints and chamfers are produced. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Plaster cracks are cut out and filled with mortar. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Damaged plaster is identified, cut out, removed and repaired with plaster mortar. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A roughcast plaster wall is repaired to match existing plaster finish. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Apply screeds to concrete floors. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    Sand (levelling) screed is mixed and applied to a concrete floor. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Grano screed is mixed and applied to a concrete floor. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Concrete steps are screeded to a granolithic finish. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The completed surface is cured.

    Completed surfaces are protected from damage.
