PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this unit standard are able to analyse the scalp and hair, state and record the reasons for choice of conditioning hair products as required by different hair and scalp conditions, select the appropriate products and apply the products following appropriate procedures for conditioning the hair and scalp. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The typical scope and context of this unit standard is the hairdressing salon/working environment.

Select the appropriate products according to hair and scalp analysis to improve the condition hair

Select the appropriate products according to hair and scalp analysis to improve the condition of the hair, apply surface or instant conditioner according to manufacturer's instructions, recommend products for home care from at least two different product ranges and prepare the client for further services.

  • Explain the basic categories of surface conditioners with reference to basic conditioners, conditioning sprays, hot oils, leave in conditioners, colour or perm conditioners, timed conditioners, conditioners combined with styling lotions;
  • Explain the nature of basic surface conditioners;
  • Discuss treatment for minor problems by hair conditioning;
  • Discuss conditioners with reference to:
    - Basic ingredients used in them;
    - Their function;
    - Selection of conditioners
    - Removal of excess conditioner from the hair shaft;
  • Explain types of hair condition and the problems of hair and conditioning for external nourishment of the hair, acid rinses, conditioners for fine hair, conditioners for frizzy hair, split end serum, conditioners for use after product build up;
  • Discuss and explain the intensive treatments for damaged, weakened, and seriously sensitised hair by means of restructurants;
  • Explain and discuss the kinds of damage to hair that may be encountered and to distinguish between normal hair, damaged or seriously sensitised hair and weakened hair;

    Communicate effectively using visual, mathematical and/or language skills in the modes of oral and/or written presentation.

    In order to select the most suitable service and advise suitable home care products, the learner must be able to communicate effectively using visual and language skills in the modes of oral persuasion. Written skills are necessary to record information on a client card.

    Professional appearance includes aspects such as a neat, tidy, clean professional attire and personal hygiene.

    Safety precautions that must be demonstrated for assessment includes:

    Protection of client's clothes and face;
  • Testing of water temperature to ensure client comfort;
  • Control of water pressure;
  • Protection of client's head against banging or scratching;
  • Using clean towels, tools and gloves;
  • Identification of skin allergies.
