PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard was designed to assist learners who are about to embark on careers, or learners who are faced with a career change, to explore the world of work and select a career path or type of employment. It is intended for the unemployed, out of school youth and employees faced with a change in employment status. It could be included as an elective in any workplace qualification.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Investigating possible sources of employment opportunities.
  • Investigating the requirements for specific work opportunities.
  • Matching a personal profile to career and labour market opportunities.
  • Understanding the process of applying for work. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is recommended that learners should complete the unit standard, "Apply knowledge of self in order to make a life decision" before attempting this unit standard.

  • Potential sources of information include but are not limited to national, regional and local newspapers, local bulletin boards, personal contacts, Internet and networking.

    Investigate possible sources of information about employment opportunities in own area.

    1. Potential sources of information about employment opportunities are listed and classified according to work categories. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Labour centers, recruitment agencies, labour brokers, employment agencies and career resource centers investigated as possible sources of employment information. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The concept of job shadowing as a means of accessing employment is explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Investigate the requirements for specific work opportunities 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Entry requirements and training needed for a particular career or type of employment are investigated for three different fields or types of employment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Practitioners/employees in a selected field or type of work are interviewed to ascertain the reality of the selected type of work. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Formal and informal learning institutions/providers accessible to the learner are discussed in terms of the education and training opportunities available at each site. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Match own personal profile to career and labour market opportunities.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Ways of determining labour market demands are explained for own situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Three different work environments are investigated and a choice of occupation is made based on own profile and preferences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Personal circumstances that could affect an employment decision are identified and an indication is given of how these could be accommodated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the process of applying for work. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The steps in the process of securing employment are explained with reference to a specific work opportunity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Information from a personal profile relevant to a specific work position is selected and presented to a group. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. A portfolio is compiled at a level suitable for submission to a prospective employee. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Questions to be discussed with a prospective employer are formulated for own situation. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Assessment of this Unit Standard should be contextual, practical and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.
  • Assessors must be registered as assessors with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the appropriate ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the appropriate ETQA.
  • The mechanisms and requirements for moderation should be applied as per the ETQA`s criteria.
  • Assessment should include both formative and summative assessment.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the appropriate ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the appropriate ETQA.

    The learner is able to organise and manage him/herself investigating work opportunities. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING 
    The learner is able to collect, organise and critically evaluate information by investigating different types of work environments and discussing available training opportunities. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING 
    The learner is able to communicate effectively in presenting relevant information to a group and interviewing practitioners/employees about the reality of a selected type of work.
