PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard requires learners to have the background knowledge required to assess a long term medical risk. It will be useful for underwriters, life claims assessors, reinsurers, medical claims assessors who need to apply knowledge of cancer related impairments to assess long term risk.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Describing cancer as a medical condition.
  • Indicating how cancer is diagnosed and treated.
  • Outlining the long term prognosis of cancer.
  • Applying knowledge of cancer to assess a risk.

    The typical scope of this unit standard is:
  • Treatment includes, but is not limited to, surgery, palliative, radiation and chemotherapy.
  • Evidence includes, but is not limited to, oncology reports, histology and pathological reports and MR Scans
  • Risk factors include, but are not limited to, medical, lifestyle, occupation and avocation risks.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe cancer as a medical condition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The concept of cancer is explained with reference to whether it is benign or malignant, localised or infiltrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Levels of classification applied to cancer are used to interpret the severity of the condition. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Indicate how cancer is diagnosed and treated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Objective medical evidence is interpreted to determine the extent of the cancer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Treatment used for cancer is investigated for three different case studies and an indication is given of the duration of the treatment in each case. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Outline the long term prognosis of cancer.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The most common types of cancer are identified and an indication is given of the prognosis of each. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The relationship between the level of cancer and the long term prognosis is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Medical evidence is interpreted in order to make an assessment decision and indication is given of when it is necessary to refer evidence to the next level of authority. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of wrong or inappropriate decisions in assessing long term risk are explained from the point of view of the underwriter, claims assessor, insurer and the client. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Apply knowledge of cancer to assess risk.

    The risk factors in three case studies are analysed to determine the risk.
