PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will display an understanding of the context and impact of gender violence as prescribed by South African legislation and international instruments. Learners will also gain knowledge about and be able to provide basic support and assistance to survivors of gender violence. Learners will include service providers in government, Non-Governmental Organisations, Community-Based Organisations and Faith-Based Organisations, who are working in the field of Victim Empowerment or have an interest in it.

Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Understanding the context of violence in South African communities
  • Demonstrating an understanding of gender-based violence
  • Assisting victims of sexual offences
  • Assisting victims of domestic violence
  • Assisting and facilitating referral of victims of gender violence in the Criminal Justice System

    Relevant procedures to be followed in relation to seeking redress for victims of gender violence is described according to departmental and organisational policy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Secondary victimisation in relation to the Criminal Justice System is defined and explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Strengths and weaknesses of current legal provisions in assisting victims of gender violence are described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Support services in the court environment are identified and described in terms of their role. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in this Unit Standard as well as the integrated competence described in the Exit Level Outcome of the Qualification.
