PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Learners credited with this unit standard are able to research and apply techniques for application to spatial design. The unit standard contributes to the learning of those who want to develop a career path in the Art, Craft and Design sector, and contributes to greater levels of production and quality in this industry.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Interpret the brief for spatial design
  • Organise resources for spatial design
  • Test design approaches for spatial design
  • Make a model or aspect of the design

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication, NQF Level 4.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The following statements provide a general guide to the scope and complexity of the competence expected of the learner:
  • Spatial design work may include office space planning, set designs, events installation for specific event, and space design for exterior spaces or environments, exhibition design.
  • The brief describes and specifies the work to be completed; is usually prepared by commissioning body or organization; may be written, diagrammatic, visual or verbal.
  • Specifications would be articulated in the brief and may refer to purpose, client needs, dimensions and style.
  • Parameters or constraints may refer to cost, material characteristics, timeframe, legal considerations and technology.
  • Preliminary visual representation may include sketching, plan drawing, sample boards, colour boards, CADD and photographical / digital and multi-media imaging.
  • Workspace needs may include drafting table, lighting and power requirements, electronic equipment, process-specific space needs.
  • Tools and equipment may include hand tools, power tools, lighting equipment, electronic devises and ladders.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Interpret the brief for spatial design.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The specifications of the brief are interpreted correctly.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The users or clients for the proposed design are determined and inform design decisions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Specifications, parameters or constraints of the brief are clarified in consultation with relevant stakeholders.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Information related to the brief is sourced, researched and evaluated, efficiently.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Organise resources for spatial design.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Resources required for the design, including workspace, tools and equipment are identified correctly.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Resources are prepared and cared for in accordance with safety and organisational requirements

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Storage and inventory procedures are followed in accordance with organisational procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Test design approaches for spatial design.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
A preliminary visual representation of the brief was produced, which reflects the specifications of the brief.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Possible approaches to the design are identified and criteria for the selection of the final approach are established, which are in alignment with the desired product

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Tools and equipment are selected for the testing of approaches and techniques which are appropriate

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
A range of techniques and materials are tested and experimented with in pursuit for the ideal way to meet the requirements of the brief

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Testing processes are evaluated against selection criteria and the preferred approach is selected, based on the requirements of the brief.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
Design approaches based on testing processes are refined and accurately documented.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Make a model or aspect of the design.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The need to make a model and the scope of work required, are realistically evaluated.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Materials, tools and techniques to make the model are selected and organised in accordance with the design approach.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The model is safely produced, ensuring consistency with the selected approach and the brief

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The work is presented in accordance with the brief specifications.
