PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can set up and operate peeling / slicing facilities in wet processing area of the veneer, block board and plywood manufacturing environment, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Collect and set up tools and equipment
  • Operate peeling / slicing equipment
  • Carry out routine maintenance and lubrication of log breakdown and ancillary handling equipment 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:

    i) Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF Level 2;
    ii) An understanding of the basic activities of the veneer and plywood manufacturing process and procedures of the relevant workplace;
    iii) Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 2 requirements. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    a) The scope of this Unit Standard covers:

    i) The environment, which can be described as the Wet Processing Area of a Veneer/Plywood/Block board Plant and specifically the peeling / slicing area(s) of the Wet Processing Area. (Range = peeler receiving deck, peeler, clipper, stacking, peeled veneer, outfeed and waste removal equipment and systems).
    ii) All personnel involved in the activities in the Wet Processing Area.
    iii) All material handled and processed into and from the peeling / slicing areas of the Wet Processing Area.
    iv) All the prescribed work place procedures and safety, health and environmental management procedures relating to the peeling / slicing process.
    v) All prescribed routine set up, maintenance and lubrication procedures and schedules, tools and equipment used in peeling / slicing systems.
    vi) All the prescribed specifications for Peeled / Sliced products.
    vii) All prescribed product measuring and recording procedures, tools and standards.

    b) The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner in setting up and operating the peeling / slicing facilities in the Wet Processing Area.

    c) The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 3, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a veneer and plywood manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 3 to 5. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Collect and set up tools and equipment.

    The area is kept clean, neat and safe as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal protective equipment is utilised as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The availability of the required tools for setting up the peeling / slicing facilities ensures successful execution of peeling / slicing operations in the Wet Processing Area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The correct tools for setting up the peeling / slicing facilities are assembled timeously as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The peeling / slicing facility is correctly set up and ensures that logs are converted into wet veneer products in the most efficient manner as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Operate peeling / slicing equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The operation of the peeling / slicing facilities is carried out in the prescribed manner as per work instructions 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Logs are converted into wet veneer lumber and meet the correct dimensions and quality standards as per production requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The correct throughput and quality of wet veneer products is achieved as per production requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Carry out routine maintenance and lubrication of log breakdown and ancillary handling equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct routine maintenance and lubrication schedules are carried out timeously as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Routine maintenance and lubrication schedules and reports are correctly completed as per work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the
    relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    A demonstrated understanding of:

    i. The setting up of peeling / slicing equipment and installation of appropriate cutting tools, to prescribed standards;
    ii. The operation of peeling / slicing equipment and well as ancillary material handling equipment. (logs, peeled veneer, waste material);
    iii. Maintaining product dimension and process throughput standards;
    iv. The routine maintenance of peeling / slicing equipment as well as ancillary materials handling equipment.;
    v. Competence in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to NQF Level 3;
    vi. Competence in work procedures, safety and health measures, and environmental management principles equivalent to NQF Level 3;
    vii. Knowledge of the correct assembly of set up and operation tools required for the peeling / slicing facilities;
    viii. Knowledge of the correct operating techniques for peeling / slicing facilities in the Wet Processing area;
    ix. Knowledge of the correct throughput and quality control procedures for the peeling / slicing facilities;
    x. Knowledge of the correct procedures for the routine maintenance and lubrication of peeling / slicing facilities in the Wet Processing Area. 

    UNIT STANDARD DEVELOPMENTAL OUTCOME 
    Participate in carrying out the prescribed production programme /work plan for the work area of the Wet Processing Area.

    Assist in training/coaching workers in the Wet Processing Area and discuss with them and the relevant responsible person all aspects of their activities in this work area.

    Assume full responsibility for all tools and instruments used in the peeling / slicing area of the Wet Processing Area.
