PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

This unit standard is for people who can set up and operate glue mixing, handling and storage facilities in dry processing area of the veneer / plywood / block board plant, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:

Collect and set up tools and equipment (Range: glue mixing, handling and storage)

Operate and control glue mixing, handling and storage equipment

Carry out routine maintenance and lubrication of glue mixing and recording equipment

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:

i) Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF Level 2;
ii) An understanding of the basic activities of the veneer and plywood manufacturing process and procedures of the relevant workplace;
iii) Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 2 requirements.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE

The Outcomes that Learners achieve will be judged subject to these being achieved:

i) Within the standard time prescribed by the organisation;
ii) While following all the safety procedures required by the OSHACT and the workplace; and
iii) Strictly according to the organisation's work place procedures.

a) The scope of this Unit Standard covers:

i) The environment, which can be described as the Dry Processing Area of a Veneer / Plywood / Block board Plant and specifically the glue mixing operation of the Dry Processing Area.
ii) All personnel involved in the activities in the Dry Processing Area.
iii) All material handled and processed in this glue mixing operation of the Dry Processing Area.
iv) All the prescribed work place procedures and safety, health and environmental management procedures relating to the glue mixing operation.
v) All the prescribed routine maintenance and lubrication procedures and schedules, tools and materials used in the glue mixing operation.
vi) All prescribed glue measuring, weighing, recording, handling and storage standards and procedures.

b) The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 3 in the veneer and plywood manufacturing activity.

c) The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 3, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a veneer and plywood manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 3 to 5.

The availability of the required tools for setting up the glue mixing facilities ensures successful execution of the glue mixing operations in the Dry Processing Area.

The correct tools for setting up the glue mixing facilities are assembled timeously as per work instructions.

The glue mixing facility is correctly set up and ensures that glue can be mixed, handled and stored in the most efficient manner as per work instructions.

The operation of the glue mixing, handling and storage facilities is carried out in the prescribed manner as per work instructions.

Glue is mixed, handled and stored to meet the optimal quality standards as per production requirements.

The correct throughput and quality of board products is achieved as per production requirements.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

The control of the glue mixing, handling and storage processes carried out in the prescribed manner.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5

The correct control of glue mixing quantity and quality assures the availability of acceptable glue.

Carry out routine maintenance and lubrication of glue mixing and recording equipment.

The correct routine maintenance and lubrication schedules are carried out timeously as per work instructions.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Routine maintenance and lubrication schedules and report are correctly completed as per work instructions.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the
relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.

Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA

Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA

Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA

Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable

The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures

UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE

A demonstrated understanding of:

i. The measurement and recording of glue mixed, handled and stored in the glue mixing operation to prescribed standards;
ii. The setting up and adjustment and operation of the system to receive, measure, weigh, record, store and move glue to prescribed standards, in the glue mixing operation;
iii. The routine maintenance of the system and it's component parts to prescribed standards;
iv. The measurement and recording of glue processed by the glue spreading facility;
v. Competence in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to NQF Level 3;
vi. Competence in work procedures, safety and health measures, and environmental management principles equivalent to NQF Level 3;
vii. Knowledge of the tools and materials required to mix, handle and store glue;
viii. Knowledge of the correct glue mixing, handling and storage set up procedures;
ix. Knowledge of controlling glue mixing, handling and storage in the glue mixing operation;
x. Knowledge of the correct glue mixing quantity and quality control procedures;
xi. Knowledge of the correct procedures for maintaining and lubricating glue mixing, handling and storage facilities.

UNIT STANDARD DEVELOPMENTAL OUTCOME

Participate in carrying out the prescribed production programme / work plan for the work area of the glue mixing operation.

Assume full responsibility for all tools, materials and instruments used in the work area of the glue mixing operation.

Lead the workers in the work area of the glue mixing operation.

Assist in training / coaching workers in the glue mixing operation and discussing with them and the relevant responsible person all aspects of their activities in this work area.
