The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 3 in the timber roof truss manufacturing activity. The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 3, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a timber roof truss manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 3 to 5. |

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Timber is correctly selected from pre-drawn storage area according to cutting list and design requirements. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Timber is checked and ensured to be of correct quantity, quality, grades and sizes as per design specifications. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
An awareness of defects which cause structural pine unsuitable for truss manufacture (reference SABS 1783-1), Various knot types, Moisture content, Wane, Warp - (BOW, CUP, SPRING OR TWIST) is demonstrated as per requirements. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Discrepancies regarding quantity, quality, grades and sizes are reported to the relevant person and rectified as per work instructions. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Non-complying raw material or products are correctly and safely eliminated from the production flow line. |

Cutting equipment is accurately calibrated and saw blades are sharp as per machine specifications. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
All safety guards are in place and personal protective equipment is in place, and the machine is started up as per work instructions. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The correct sizes and grades of timber are fed into saw cutting production run as per job sheet, and the machine is switched off after completion of production run. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
The blades and lengths are re-set to suit each component requirement as per job sheet. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
The machine is re-started and each component is cut as determined by design requirements, ensuring that all safety standards are complied with. |

The cut material is loaded onto conveyance equipment for transfer to assembly storage area and all components are properly identified and marked as per job sheet. |

Arrangements have been made for the conveyance of cut material to assembly or storage area as per work instructions. |
UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS |
An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.
