PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable people to receive and sort incoming material into lengths, sizes and grades and store in designated areas, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Sort timber into size, grades and length categories and identify plate sizes for correct product storage.
  • Identify, locate, handle and store material in appropriate storage areas.
  • Maintain storage facilities. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF Level 1.
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the timber roof truss manufacturing process and procedures of the relevant workplace.
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • All the safety rules and personal protective equipment employed in the relevant production stage.
  • Handling equipment relevant to this work area (e.g. forklift).
  • Workplace prescriptions regarding manual handling.
  • All the personnel involved in this work area.
  • All the production equipment in this work area (Timber sizes and grades of SABS structural pine and nail plates sizes).
  • SABS 1782-1.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 2 in the timber roof truss manufacturing activity.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 2, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a timber roof truss manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 2 to 4. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Sort timber into size, grades and length categories and identify plate sizes for correct product storage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Raw materials are safely unloaded as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Different structural, grades, sizes and lengths of timber are correctly identified for sorting and conveyance to correct storage areas as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The SAB grade marks are identified and explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Nail plate sizes and types are correctly identified for conveyance to storage area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    An awareness of H2 requirements of SABS 1288 for treatment of structural pine in gazetted areas where treatment is necessary is demonstrated and applied according to work place requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify, locate, handle and store material in appropriate storage areas.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Material is safely loaded and directed to designated position for further storage as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Material is safely stacked or stored into designated storage areas as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Store records are accurately kept as required by work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Safe working conditions are maintained at all times as prescribed in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Arrangements have been made to convey materials to the designated storage area as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Maintain storage facilities.

    Old stock is removed and not allowed to accumulate. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Store area is kept safe, clean and uncluttered, as per work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures.
