PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can manage the health and safety measures in a Timber Roof Truss Plant, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Ensure that the Organisation's health and safety measures (incorporating the relevant OSH Act stipulations) are understood and adhered to by all the workers in the relevant work areas.
  • Ensure that the relevant work area is safe for all workers and that the health risk factors are correctly eliminated/controlled.
  • Train all workers in the relevant work area in emergency drills and where applicable practical first aid application.
  • Record all first aid activities and emergency situations, with reasons, the remedial actions taken and outcomes of these actions. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:

    i) Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF 3;
    ii) An understanding of the basic activities of a Timber Roof Truss Plant's policies and procedures of the relevant workplace;
    iii) Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    a) The scope of this Unit Standard cover:

    i. The typical scope of this Unit Standard covers the "Range" set out in the specific outcomes above.
    ii. The typical context of this unit standard is the training of a Learner at NQF Level 2 a wood products environment.
    iii. The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 2, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in the various Wood Product activities and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 2 to 4.

    b) The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner to an NQF Level 4 competency.

    c) The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 4, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a Timber Roof Truss Plant manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 4 to 8. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Ensure that the Organisation's health and safety measures (incorporating the relevant OSH Act stipulations) are understood and adhered to by all the workers in the relevant work areas. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The Organisation's health and safety prescriptions are correctly understood and adhered to by the workforce in the relevant work areas. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The responsible person applies the correct procedures to propagate the Organisation's health and safety procedures so that all workers can understand it. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Checks are in place to ensure that health and all workers correctly apply safety procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    These measures are performed at the correct time within the prescribed time limits and to the required standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Ensure that the relevant work area is safe for all workers and that the health risk factors are eliminated/controlled. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The safety and health risk factors in the relevant work area are correctly monitored and the measures to control these are correctly adjusted to maintain the prescribed levels. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The responsible person follows the correct procedures to assure that the prescribed levels of safety and health are maintained in the relevant work area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    These activities are carried out at the correct time within the prescribed time limits and to the required standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Train all workers in the relevant work area in emergency drills and where applicable practical first aid application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct training of the workers in the relevant work area in emergency drills and first aid application correctly prepares the workers for eventualities in this regard. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The responsible person applies the correct methods to provide the prescribed training. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The correctly trained workers execute the relevant tasks of first aid and coping with emergencies as prescribed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    This training is done at the appropriate time and within the prescribed time limits and to the required standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Record all first aid activities and emergency situations, with reasons, the remedial actions taken and outcomes of these actions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The reasons for first aid activities and emergency situations, plus the remedial actions taken and the results of these actions, are correctly recorded as prescribed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The responsible person performs this task as prescribed to produce the required records for management. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    These records contain the correct information in the prescribed format as detailed in the policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The recording is done at the appropriate time, within the prescribed time limits and to the required standards. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the
    relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    A demonstrated understanding of:

    i. Competency in communication and mathematical skills equivalent to NQF Level 4 requirements;
    ii. Competency in managing the health and safety programme in the relevant work areas in a Timber Roof Truss Plant, equivalent to NQF Level 4 requirements;
    iii. The NQF Level 4 learner's responsibilities regarding the safety and health stipulations, the workplace procedures and the environmental management principles relevant to lumber grading;
    iv. Knowledge of educating the work force in the relevant work areas in the Organisations health and safety measures;
    v. Knowledge of methods to ensure the prescribed safety and health levels in the relevant work area;
    vi. Knowledge of training workers in the relevant work area in first aid and emergency drills;
    vii. Knowledge of providing and positioning first aid materials, and equipment, tools and other aids for emergency situations;
    viii. Knowledge of recording first aid activities and emergency situations, the reasons and remedial actions, and the outcomes of these.
