PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard has been developed for the surveying occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement within social and economic transformation by gaining surveying skills leading to a qualification based on unit standards. A person who has successfully completed this unit standard is able to compute geodetic information using basic principles and understanding of geodetic surveying.

A qualifying learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge on the basic concepts of Geodetic Surveying.
  • Demonstrate knowledge on the basic concepts of Astronomical Observations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic Triangulation Networks.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the basic concepts of Levelling Networks.
  • Calculate basic geodetic quantities from triangulation and levelling observations.

    2. Knowledge of the construction of Leveling Networks is understood and explained.

    Fundamental Bench Marks, Main Bench Marks, Intermediate Bench Marks, Primary Leveling, Secondary Leveling and Tertiary Leveling.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Calculate basic geodetic quantities from triangulation and leveling observations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Reduction of triangulation observations are determined in accordance with Survey Standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Reduce field books for provisional coordinates and/or calculate least squares adjustment with appropriate software.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Checks for computed quantities are done in accordance with Survey Standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Leveling observations are reduced in accordance with Survey Standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Reduce field books for provisional coordinates and/or calculate least squares adjustment with appropriate software.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Loop closures to be computed and distributed proportionately in accordance with Survey Standards.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or will assess this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA and registered with FE / HE registrar.

    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    4. Anyone wishing to become an assessor or provider of learning must provide an affordable assessment / learning service.

    Therefore anyone wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
