PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who collect and prepare wattle bark and leached bark 'spents' from deliveries and leaching process for laboratory analysis to determine bark quality and leaching efficiency, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Collect samples of wattle bark from deliveries and leached bark 'spents' from leaching process.
  • Prepare collected samples for analysis by laboratory personnel.
  • Undertake cleaning and other general duties in the laboratory. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF Level 1.
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the tannin extraction process and procedures of the relevant workplace.
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environment that can be described as the delivery area, spents floor and laboratory.
  • All the personnel involved in all the activities relating to the delivery, leaching process and laboratory.
  • All the material that is handled and processed in this work area by the sample personnel.
  • All the organisation's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area.
  • All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have a bearing on the bark sampling activity and all the other activities in this work area.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 1 in the wattle bark and spents sampling activity.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 1, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in wattle bark and spents sampling and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 1 to 3. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Collect samples of wattle bark from deliveries and leached bark 'spents' from leaching process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The bark samples of various thicknesses are collected from every truck or rail delivery to the factory. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The time and registration particulars of the vehicle/rail truck from which the sample was collected is recorded on the prescribed documentation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The 'spents' samples are collected whenever an autoclave is 'dropped' and placed in the box for processing as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The time, the shift and the autoclave number is recorded on the prescribed documentation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The canisters for the samples are dried and weighed before collected samples are placed in them. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Any problems identified whilst collecting samples are reported to the supervisor as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare collected samples for analysis by laboratory personnel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The bark and 'spents' samples are weighed and the weights recorded as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The bark and spents samples are dried separately per sample collection in an oven as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The samples, after thorough drying, are ground into 'fines' by a grinder as per work instruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The fines and relevant recorded data are passed on to the laboratory analysts for analysis as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The analysed samples are collected from the laboratory and disposed of as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Undertake cleaning and other general duties in the laboratory.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The laboratory and general laboratory equipment is kept clean at all times. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The activities and other duties assigned by the laboratory controller from time to time are carried out efficiently as per work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures. 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    A demonstrated understanding of:
  • The general activities of the extraction process.
  • The use of simple laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Reading simple laboratory instruments.
  • Accurate recording of data.
  • Education to at least NQF level 2.
