PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can prepare ignition paint, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Start the ignition paint mixing operation
  • Process Ignition paint mixing operation
  • Shut down the ignition paint mixing operation 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in communication and numerical skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an ABET level 4;
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the match manufacturing production process in their workplace;
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of the Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environment that can be described as match manufacturing.
  • All the personnel involved in all activities of match manufacturing.
  • All the material that is handled and processed in this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the company's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have bearing on, match manufacturing and all other activities in this work area.

    The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 2 in the activity of match manufacturing.

    The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 2, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in match manufacturing is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 2 to 4. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Start the ignition paint mixing operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The required chemicals are collected from the chemical stores as per production plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Water is emptied from the ball mills as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Chemicals are weighed for a batch of ignition paint as per production plan. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Process Ignition paint mixing operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Timer is set and the ball mills are allowed to run as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Pressure is released when the mills switches off and each mill is drained into the paint pot as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    iPaint in the pot is stirred with a paddle and a sample is drawn for testing as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The viscosity of the paint is checked and corrective action is taken if out of specification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Manufactured ignition paint is stored in the designated area of the paint room. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Usage of the ignition paint on the chambons machine is monitored and fresh batches are delivered as required from designated areas as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Earth wire is used all the times whenever dry phosphorus is loaded as per safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    Ignition paint stored for an extended period of time is re-tested before usage and the results are recorded on the relevant process control sheet. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Shut down the ignition paint mixing operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    gnition paint is stored in the cold room if it is to be stored over the week-end as per safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    One or two pots of ignition paint are kept ready for use in the paint room as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ball mills are filled with water and rotated a few turns to clean the balls as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Water is emptied from the ball mills and the ball mills are refilled again to stand overnight as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    All the machinery cleaned and switched off as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Floor is cleaned and chemicals are cleared and secured as per work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures
