PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can form inner boxes by operating a machine, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Conduct pre start checks on machine
  • Change and thread the reel
  • Inspect inner boxes
  • Clean the machine 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in communication and numerical skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an ABET level 4;
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the match manufacturing production process in their workplace;
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements.

    The scope of the Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environment that can be described as match manufacturing.
  • All the personnel involved in all activities of match manufacturing.
  • All the material that is handled and processed in this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the company's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have bearing on, match manufacturing and all other activities in this work area.

    The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 2 in the activity of match manufacturing.

    The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 2, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in match manufacturing is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 2 to 4.

    Conduct pre start checks on machine.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The top Perspex guard is opened as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The glue pot components are checked to ensure they are cleaned, greased and assembled as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The folding guides are checked to ensure they are cleaned, greased and fastened as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The extractor fans are switched on as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The top Perspex guard cover is closed as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The machine is switched on as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Change and thread the reel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Empty reel cores are removed and new reel fitted as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reel is clamped with clamping cones. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reel is checked to ensure that it is straight as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The reel is lifted by using the lifting device, which positions the reel as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Reel information is recorded on Process Control Sheet. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The board with the colour on the outside is threaded under and over the tension roller. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The board with the colour on the inside is threaded under and over the idler roller before it is threaded under and over the tension roller. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    Creasing rollers are opened and board is fed through tensioner whilst ensuring that the coloured side of the board is facing downwards when it enters the machine as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    Skillet guide is checked to ensure that it is lifted so that the board can go through as per work instruction. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Inspect inner boxes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Quality checks are conducted on formed inner boxes as per work instructions and recorded on Process Control Sheet. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The inner boxes are checked for excessive glue. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The inner boxes are checked for splits and or folds as per quality specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Clean the machine.

    The machine is switched off as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The top Perspex guard is opened as per work instructions 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The glue pot components are removed and washed, greased and assembled as per work instructions 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The cup chain is cleaned as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The folder guides and side folders are removed, cleaned and assembled as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The pressure wheel is cleaned as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The waste boxes are emptied into the waste bin as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    The machine is blown free of dust and work area is cleaned as per work instructions 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his/ her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures
