PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can operate a flaker to prepare flakes in the chipboard manufacturing process, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Prepare for and Start Up Flaker
  • Monitor the Flaker Performance
  • Stop Flaker and Change the Knife Rings 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:

    i) Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at ABET 3.
    ii) An understanding of the basic activities of the fibreboard and chipboard industry process and procedures of the relevant workplace.
    iii) Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to ABET level 3 requirements. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    a) The scope of this Unit Standard covers:

    i. The environment which can be described as a fibreboard and chipboard manufacturing plant with all its equipment and the correct sequence of the production phases.
    ii. The raw materials processed and products produced by the operation.
    iii. Tthe people involved in the various workplaces.

    b) The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 2 in the fibreboard and chipboard manufacturing activity.

    c) The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 2, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a fibreboard and chipboard manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 2 to 4. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare for and Start Up Flaker. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The area is kept clean and safe at all times as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal protective safety equipment is utilised as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The flaker is prepared for start up by ensuring that the "de-isolation" procedure has been adhered to as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The flaker is started up as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Monitor the Flaker Performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The flakes are checked to ensure that they meet the specified quality requirements as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The flaker performance is monitored and arrangements are made for the changing of the knives as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Heavy parts are automatically dropped out and foreign materials are disposed of as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A record is kept detailing all the relevant activities during the flaker operation as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Stop Flaker and Change Knife Rings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The signal is given to the relevant person to stop the flow of materials to the flaker as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The flaker is stopped using the correct sequence as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The machine is isolated as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The knife rings are changed strictly according to the procedure and the securing bolts are tightened correctly in accordance to the manufacturers specified settings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The area is cleaned and kept safe at all times as per work instructions 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures
