PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who stroke a boiler with coal, clean out ash and klinkers, and who operate a dryer and mixer according to standard work procedures, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Prepare for pre-start coal production run
  • Load boiler with coal
  • Operate Mixer 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:

    i) Competency in communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an ABET level 2
    ii) An understanding of the basic activities of the charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing production process in their workplace
    iii) Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    a) The scope of the Unit Standard covers:

    i) The whole environment that can be described as charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing.
    ii) All the personnel involved in all activities of charcoal and/or briquette manufacturer.
    iii) All the material that is handled and processed in this work area of charcoal and/or briquette manufacture.
    iv) All the company's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area of charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing.
    v) All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have bearing on, charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing and all other activities in this work area.

    b) The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 2 in the activity of charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing.

    c) The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 2, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 2 to 4. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare for pre-start coal production run. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All personal protective equipment is worn in accordance with OSH regulations and work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ensure all tools and equipment are working to safety requirements and if a problem is detected the Foreman is notified as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The correct amount of coal is received as per production plan requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The coal is deposited in the designated area as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    All ash and klinker is removed from the boiler and deposed of in the designated dumping area per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The work area must be left in clean and neat condition. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Load boiler with coal. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The coal is checked to ensure that it meets the quality standard of the particular production run. (Range: dust particles and granulation) 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The boiler is safely loaded with coal as required by production plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Spillage is removed from the work area as per safe work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Work area is cleaned and ready for the next production run as per work instructions 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Operate Mixer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Raw material is loaded into mixer as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The mixer is loaded safely as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The mixer is operated as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The mixer is safely off loaded as per work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    A demonstrated understanding of:

    i) Charcoal manufacturing principles and practical application in a charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing environment, in addition with knowledge of Safety/Environmental/Health issues.

    Operate as an efficient unit in carrying out the productions plan/programme in the starch shed.
