PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to prepare for and perform the pre-covering process of upholstery in a safe and economical manner and in line with organisational standards. The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying and selecting materials for pre-covering process.
  • Selecting equipment and tools.
  • Preparing item to be upholstered.
  • Positioning and securing support and ancillary materials onto frame. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in basic numeracy and literacy equivalent to ABET Level 4. They will also have achieved, or be able to demonstrate equivalent competence to the National Certificate in Furniture Making, NQF level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE

  • Materials: frames; fillings; foams; springs; webbing, supports and ancillary items.
  • Specifications: oral and written.
  • Queries: unclear specifications; unclear communication.
  • Equipment and tools: for rasping; hammering; stapling; cutting; removing staples or nail, spring cutter; foam cutter.

    Position and secure support and ancillary materials onto frame.

    Frame is checked and confirmed to be ready for upholstery. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Any damage or faulty frames are identified and reported to the relevant person. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Support and ancillary materials are firmly and accurately secured onto frame. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Damaged, incorrectly positioned and unsecure support and ancillary materials are identified and promptly rectified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Support and ancillary materials conform to shape, tension and production requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Frame is inspected and confirmed as ready for next stage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Frame is moved safely and without damage to a designated location.

    Appropriate equipment and tools are used safely and correctly according to their designated use.
