PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to cover a prepared frame using basic upholstery hand tools in a safe manner and in line with standards.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Selecting and preparing tools for covering.
  • Selecting and preparing components for covering.
  • Performing and completing covering operations. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in basic numeracy and literacy equivalent to ABET Level 4. They will also have achieved, or be able to demonstrate equivalent competence to the National Certificate in Furniture Making, NQF level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following elements may include but are not limited to:
  • Specification: written; oral; fabric type; fabric size; fabric colour.
  • Queries regarding: omissions; errors; unclear information.
  • Equipment and tools: tack hammer; staple gun; staple remover; upholstery shears; wheel or mini fabric cutter.
  • Components: prepared fabric covering components.
  • Frames: basic frames, unexposed.
  • Secure: fixing; tension.
  • Covering techniques: normal; visual pleating.
  • Problems: marks; incorrect alignment; incorrect tension; incorrect positioning.
  • Planned interruptions: tea breaks; lunch breaks; toilet; training; setting up.
  • Unplanned interruptions: breakdowns; power failure; materials shortfalls; identification of product fault.
  • Quality checks: output against specification and storage of output; customer requirements.
  • Relevant action: reporting; recording; rectifying.
  • Production requirements: location and quality control.

    Cover is firmly and accurately secured onto frame.

    Components are sewn in correct sequence.

    Seams are neat and sewn according to specification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Stapling is performed accurately and safely.

    Bottom cloth is firmly and accurately secured.

    Visual appearance of covered item conforms to specification and organisational requirements.

    Any problems with the covering are rectified or reported to the relevant person.
