PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to correctly and safely prepare a machine for the sawing of timber and board products. The person is also able to produce quality products that meet required standards. The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Selecting and preparing materials for sawing.
  • Preparing and setting machines to saw timber and board product components and products.
  • Machining materials to form sawn component or products. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in basic numeracy and literacy equivalent to ABET Level 4. They will also have achieved, or be able to demonstrate equivalent competence to the National Certificate in Furniture Making, NQF level 1.

    All necessary materials and equipment for the job are identified and accessed, and any non-availability is reported to the relevant person.

    The quality and quantity of materials is checked and remedial action taken if there is non-conformity.

    The compatibility of materials with the machine to be used is accurately established and correct remedial action taken if there is non-conformity.

    The operations are completed within the allowed time.

    Own work practices minimise the risk of injury and damage to machinery and equipment and the health and safety of self and others.

    Jigs, templates and other necessary dimension control aids are correct and fit for the purpose.

    Correct tooling for the job is fitted and secured correctly.

    Correct routine procedures for the sawing machine are carried out in accordance with all safety regulations.

    Where necessary, assistants are in place prior to and during operations.

    The use of guards and relevant safety procedures and requirements are maintained throughout the operations.

    The finished sawn products conform to required specification.
