PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit is for people who prepare and install anchors, rig intermediate supports, tail trees & a tower, and set up working cables for a cable yarding operation. People credited with this unit are able to:
  • Prepare and install anchors for a cable yarding operation.
  • Rig intermediate supports and tailtrees.
  • Rig a tower.
  • Set up the working cables for a highlead configuration.
  • Set up a yarder in a standing skyline configuration where an intermediate support is used.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic safety in forestry operations.
  • Cut felled material using a chainsaw.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of wire ropes, rigging accessories, anchor systems and rigging in cable yarding operations.

    Safety requirements applicable to the operations are explained to ensure the health and safety of all personnel.

    All personal protective equipment required, is checked for functionality and used in terms of company policy and legal requirements.

    Equipment is checked for suitability, serviceability and corrective action is taken, if required.

    Suitable stump anchors are selected according to the requirements of the Handbook and the operational plan.

    Rigging equipment is checked for completeness, suitability, serviceability and corrective action is taken, if required.

    The requirements for ascending support trees are met according to the Handbook.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A singletree intermediate support is rigged complying with the requirements of the Handbook section 9.5.2.1 or 9.5.2.2 and the operational plan.

    A doubletree intermediate support is rigged complying with the requirements of the Handbook section 9.5.2.3 and the operational plan.

    The tower is raised according to manufacturer's specifications or according to the Handbook section 9.5.1.

    Guidelines are tensioned and attached to anchors according to the Handbook.

    Rigging requirements for the tower are met according to the Handbook and manufacturer's specifications.

    Safe work practices are adhered to throughout rigging.
