This unit is for people who intend working in a forestry operation. People credited with this unit are able to:
  • Explain the duties of employers & employees and identify the safety representatives & first aid person for the specific work place.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of hazards, safety and emergency procedures in forestry operations.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain the duties of employers and employees and identify the safety representative and first aid person for the specific work place. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The duties of employers to their employees are explained in terms of section 8 of the OSH Act. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The duties of employees at work are explained in terms of section 14 of the OSH Act. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The safety representative and the first aid person are identified for the specific work place. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate knowledge of hazards, safety and emergency procedures in forestry operations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Sources of risk are identified and means to manage them described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Falling trees, logs and debris; rolling trees, logs and debris; using incorrect equipment/tools and working methods; movement of equipment; using incorrect and insufficient personal protective equipment; adverse weather conditions; steeper slopes; adverse underfoot conditions; fire.

    Injuries and occupational diseases in forestry operations are described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Strains, sprains, lacerations, fractures, hearing loss, musclo-skeletal injuries.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The effect of injuries on the worker and the company are explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Human pain and suffering; cost of treating; disruption of team; loss of production; loss of income.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The concept of loss control is explained to minimise injury to personnel and damage to property. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Safe distances from working machines are identified for chainsaws and other static & mobile machines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The emergency procedures if a person is injured or killed on the job is explained according to company policy.
