This unit introduces theory to give people insight into ground-based machine extraction. It is for people who have the responsibility of operating and supervising skidders, forwarders and tractor units in extraction operations.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate knowledge of ground-based machine extraction methods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different ground-based machines used for extraction are named and their are functions explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Skidders (grapple, cable, clambunk), forwarders, tractor-trailer units with/without cranes and tractors with skidding attachments. Skidding attachments include winches, A-frames, grapples and other similar skidding attachments.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ground-based machine extraction methods are explained in terms of where and in what applications it can be used. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Skidding (grapple skidders, cable skidders, clambunk skidders and tractors with skidding attachments), forwarding (forwarders and tractor-trailer units with/without cranes).

    The advantages and disadvantages of each method and machines are explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate knowledge of factors influencing efficiencies in ground-based machine extraction.

    Implications of unplanned extraction and lack of controls are explained in terms of cost, safety, operational efficiencies and physical environmental impacts.

    The role of the different members as part of the harvesting team is explained in terms of complying with safety standards and to optimise production.

    Factors influencing skidding and forwarding operations are explained in terms of sections 4.3.4 & 4.3.5 of the Guidelines.

    Factors influencing the extraction direction are explained.

    Felling direction and layout, presentation of timber, landing location, terrain (slope, ground roughness and ground conditions), environmental considerations and equipment to be used.
