PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who want to identify and evaluate their gifts and calling to serve God within their own lives and the life of both faith community and secular community.

Those credited with this unit standard are able to
  • Analyse the Biblical concept of 'call' within both the Old and New Testament.
  • Describe the nature and role of vocation/calling in the life of a Christian
  • Identify own spiritual gifts within the context of the community of faith
  • Articulate own calling based on the insights gained from biblical and Christian concepts of call and identification of own gifts
  • Evaluate present contribution to ministries within the church and the community in the light of new insights gained

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Analyse the Biblical concept of 'call' within both the Old and New Testament. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different ways in which God calls are identified and located within both Old and New Testament. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose of God's call on a person's life is identified and supported with appropriate biblical references. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Examples of Biblical characters who have heard and responded to God's call are given. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Call to include reference to naming and re-naming as signs of belonging to God. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Consequences of people's differing responses to God's call are reviewed. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Analyse how and why God calls Christians. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The analyses should include the variety of purposes for which God calls us. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Called to respond to God's grace, called to repent and be baptised, called to be disciples, called to serve, called to be in fellowship with God and his people, called to a particular way of living, called to the ministry of reconciliation.

    The analysis should show insight into the purpose of calling as described in the New Testament especially. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The analysis should include insight into the ministry of the church as the Body of Christ. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The analysis should show that calling applies to the individual Christian as well as the Christian community. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The wide variety of ways Christians hear and respond to God's calling is recognised. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Identify own spiritual gifts within the context of the community of faith.

    A variety of strategies are used for identifying spiritual gifts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Evidence is given of an exploration of the biblical principles underlying the recognition of spiritual gifts 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The purpose of spiritual gifts is clear. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The gifts identified are corroborated by others within the faith community. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Articulate own calling based on the insights gained from biblical and Christian concepts of call and identification of own gifts.

    Personal calling is described with reference to the person's spiritual gifts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The persons calling is compatible with the pattern and practice of calling as identified in scripture and the tradition of the church.

    There is evidence of the call having been tested and supported by other within the faith community. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    There is clear evidence of an understanding that calling is wider than ordination or entering the religious life.

    Underlying the description is a recognition that calling involves service, humility and obedience. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Evaluate present contribution to ministries within the church and/or the community in the light of new insights gained.
