This Unit Standard will be useful to people who interact or intend to interact with children in a non-professional role in a social context.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are assumed to be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole Unit Standard:
  • Christian maturity refers to a position where a person is in healthy relationships with God, self, other people and the environment. Growth in maturity is an on-going process.
  • Children are regarded as people before 14 years of age.
  • Children's workers are people, mostly adults, who are interacting with children with the purpose to enhance growth in various fields of their lives. This can be done in a professional or non-professional role.
  • Assessment for this Unit Standard is based on the assumption that the learner would have regular direct contact with children.

    Specific range statements are provided in the body of the Unit Standard where they apply to particular specific outcomes or assessment criteria.

    Children's familiar with the Bible is described with references to content covered. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Learn to know the books of the Bible, how to find chapters and verses, basic structure of the Bible, basic differences between various parts (poetry, stories, history, letters, etc.

    Different Biblical genres are used effectively with children. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Genres include history, law, poetry, proverbs, prophesy, parables, letters, etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Techniques applied to help children memorise Scripture are explained with reference to learning theories and practices. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Children memorise smaller parts of Scripture. Techniques include repetition, visual aids, movement, associations, etc.

    A systematic way to read the Bible is shared with children

    The application of the Bible to children's lives is described with the use of examples.

    Children's lives are the activities, relationships and situations in which children might typically be involved in a specific context.

    Methods to identify central truths in Bible stories are described with reference to Scripture.

    Central truth refers to a doctrine, principle or statement about God, humans and our relationship with God that is highlighted by the specific story or passage.

    Ways in which children are helped to overcome obstacles to experiencing God's love are identified with reference to external and internal hindrances.

    Ways in which children are helped to commit themselves to love God are identified with reference to decision-making.

    Ways in which children are helped to respond through a life of gratitude are identified with reference to internal responses, decision-making and implementation of decisions.

    An active Christian fellowship is identified and described from observation and experience. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Activities in a Christian fellowship are described and evaluated by means of predetermined criteria. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Activities include ways of greeting or welcoming one another, singing and music, preaching and discussions, prayers, rituals, etc. The description also includes the general atmosphere and the reactions of participants. Special attention is given to the way children are treated or involved in the meeting.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Participation by children in fellowship groups is described from observation in own faith community. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Participation includes activities such as singing, sharing, praying, caring, rituals, etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The criteria for the evaluation of the nature and level of participation of children in a Christian fellowship are identified and described in terms of outcomes.

    The nature and level of participation of children in a Christian fellowship including adults is evaluated using prescribed criteria.

    Growth in Christian maturity is explained in terms of examples and concepts from the Bible. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Contemporary examples of growth in Christian maturity are described and evaluated with reference to people in the present or recent past.
