PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the causes and modes of transmission of HIV/AIDS
  • Address some of the theological questions with regards to HIV/AIDS
  • Express their own Christian response to HIV/AIDS
  • Initiate a ministry in the church or community for People Living with HIV/AIDS

    Learners are assumed to be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • The initiative can be taken by the individual him/herself or as part of a group.
  • The initiative should be supported and monitored by a person experienced in working with people living with HIV/AIDS.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain the causes and modes of transmission of HIV/AIDS. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The causes and effects of the virus are explained in language that is easily understood. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Modes of transmission are clearly described including both common and unusual modes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Myths, misconceptions and false information surrounding the cause and transmission of the virus are addressed with reference to authentic texts. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Address some of the theological questions with regards to HIV/AIDS.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Biblical norms with regard to sexuality and moral conduct are investigated from readings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Similar situations of social exclusion in the Bible are analysed and compared, e.g. leprosy, mental disease and demon possession 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Christ's teaching about love and acceptance is incorporated 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The positions of the Church is ex[lained with regard to prevention of the transmission of the virus are investigated and critiqued. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Initiate a ministry in the church or community for people living with HIV/AIDS. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A survey of the pastoral HIV/AIDS ministry is undertaken in the local church and community 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A simple analysis is completed which highlights community facilities and programmes already in place as well as what is still needed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A suitable initiative is identified which complements the survey of current pastoral ministries as well as the analysis of existing programmes in the community. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The needs identified in the analysis are explained with reference to the degree with which they are met. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A rationale for the initiative is given which shows insight into the effect of the disease itself on persons and the community as well as some of the theological issues arising. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The initiative is undertaken and reported on with evaluations being done by both the learner and participants.
