PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful to learners who wish to understand the spread of Christianity in Africa.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to describe the history of Christianity in Africa in broad outline.

Learners are assumed to be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

The following scope and context applies to the whole Unit Standard:
  • Early Christianity in Egypt, Ethiopia, Nubia and North-Western Africa, Medieval Ethiopia, Portuguese Roman Catholic expansion, Protestant missions in the 18th & 19th centuries, Christian expansion in 20th-century Africa.

    Specific range statements are provided in the body of the Unit Standard where they apply to particular specific outcomes or assessment criteria.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe the early spread of Christianity in Africa and compare Christianity in different parts of Africa. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    1st-10th centuries, Egypt, Ethiopia, Nubia, North-Western Africa, Christianity and Islam. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Major events and turning points of this historical period are described, according to modern scholarship. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    African influence on world Christianity is described in terms of monasticism, dogmatic theology (especially the Nicene Creed) and ascetic theology (the desert fathers). 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe the history of the African Christianity in the medieval period. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Reasons for the growth of Christianity in Ethiopia and its decline in Nubia are discussed with reference to the Medieval period. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Major events and turning points of the historical period are explained, in accordance with modern scholarship.

    Links are made between historical, political, economic and social factors.

    Describe the spread of Christianity in sub-Saharan Africa after 1500.
