PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to learners who wish to gain a basic competence in pastoral care as it is applied in a congregational context.
Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the basic Biblical and doctrinal principles that underlie good practice in pastoral care
  • Show an empathetic understanding of human nature in relation to people's needs
  • Apply pastoral care principles to a variety of basic situations of human need within church and community contexts

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are assumed to be competent in Communication at NQF Level 3 and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.

    Describe the role and qualities of a Christian pastoral counsellor.

    To include empathy, non-judgemental listening, compassion, empowering the other person to reach his or her own decision.

    Christian Counselling is defined and explained in accordance with recognised principles of pastoral counselling.

    The qualities of Christian counselling are described and explained to show how they operate in actual pastoral situations

    The counselling role and characteristics of the counsellor is defined from own perspective.

    The positive and negative measures of Christian pastoral counselling are identified and explained by means of comparison.

    Identify local resources and support structures in the learner's own church and community.

    Methods and principles of pastoral care are described in terms of historical and social contexts in which they were exercised 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Describe the role of prayer in Christian pastoral counselling. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    The role of prayer and caring is described with reference to appropriate biblical texts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The role of prayer and counselling is described with suitable examples from the learner's experience. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Apply pastoral care principles to a variety of situations of human need within church and community contexts. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    May include care of the sick and bereaved, care in basic marriage and family contexts; prevention of abuse; organisation of pastoral care; care of self.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The insights, skills and values pertinent to a selection from the specified range of pastoral care situations are explained and reported on in a practical way. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The boundaries and limits of personal competence are described, along with simple mechanisms for referral and teamwork. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Practice of sensitivity to the culture, gender and age is explained in terms of caring, compassion and tolerance.
