PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are involved in the repair and maintenance of domestic electrical appliances, and covers the operating principles of electrical appliances.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate legal and regulatory obligations relevant to appliance servicing; and
  • Demonstrate the operating principles of kitchen appliances, clothes washing and drying machines, electric heaters and microwave ovens.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard covers appliances such as household appliances, washing and drying machines, electric heaters and microwave ovens. This unit standard excludes refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, and air conditioners which are covered in another unit standard i.e. Demonstrate knowledge of refrigeration principles and application to domestic appliances.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of wet appliances. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Washing machines; dishwashers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The operating principles of washing machines are demonstrated with reference to methods of loading and cycles of operation according to manufacturers' specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Top and side loading, cold and hot water filling, heating, pre-soak and soak options, wash, rinse, spin.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The operating principles of dishwashers are demonstrated with reference to methods of loading and cycles of operation according to manufacturers' specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The relationship between different factors of washing are described and demonstrated according to manufacturers' specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Mechanics, thermic, water, chemical.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Obligations pertaining to workplace safety, including electrical safety, are described in terms of legal and regulatory requirements for wet appliances.

    The operating principles of vented tumble dryers are demonstrated with reference to methods of loading and cycles of operation according to manufacturers' specifications.

    The operating principles of recirculated tumble dryers are demonstrated with reference to methods of loading and cycles of operation according to manufacturers' specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The relationship between different factors of drying are described and demonstrated according to manufacturers' specifications.

    The operating principles of ovens are demonstrated with reference to components and schematic diagrams.

    The effect of heat on common materials and foods is demonstrated according to applicable specifications.

    The operating principles of extractors are demonstrated with reference to key components.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The basic principles of microwave heating are demonstrated according to manufacturers' specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Including but not limited to: electromagnetic waves of energy, frequency, absorbed energy, convection, magnetrons.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effect of microwaves on common materials and foods is demonstrated according to manufacturers' specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Metals, plastics, glass, ceramics, water, foods.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The operation of a microwave oven is demonstrated with the aid of a schematic diagram and reference to key components. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Key components including but not limited to: magnetron, voltage doubler unit, wave-guide, cooling system, turntable and drive, safety and protective devices, cooking controls, sensors.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Hazards associated with microwave ovens are described and the means of managing these hazards are demonstrated. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Heating of body fluids, Faraday cage, door sealing, door micro-switch, microwave leakage tests, charged capacitor shock.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of small appliances.

    The operating principles of water heating appliance are demonstrated with reference to components and schematic diagrams. (Kettle, coffee machine, instant water heater, urns)

    Components including but not limited to: elements, warming plates, thermostats, safety bimetal contacts. Appliances include but not limited to: kettle, coffee machine, instant water heater, urns.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The operating principles of motorised appliances are demonstrated with reference to components and schematic diagrams. (food processor, kitchen machine) 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Components including but not limited to: motor, control, accessories, use thereof. Appliances include but not limited to: food processor, kitchen machine.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The operating principles of vacuum cleaners are demonstrated with reference to components and schematic diagrams.
