PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is for people who are involved in the repair and maintenance of domestic appliances.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of electrical symbols and terminology;
  • Identify the purpose and features of diagrams used in appliance servicing; and
  • Use diagrams to explain the operation of an electrical appliance and identify faults in given situations.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The credit calculation is based on the supposed to be in place assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:
  • NQF 2 certificate which includes knowledge in:
    - Design and construct basic electrical diagrams
    - Identify basic electronic symbols
    - Understands the basics of motor operation
    - Draw components

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Candidates to use the following as aids for diagnostic purposes:
  • Cam charts
  • Programme charts
  • Wiring diagrams

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Demonstrate knowledge of electrical symbols, cam charts and terminology for domestic appliances.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Electrical drawing symbols are identified from diagrams and explained in terms of their function and relationship with other components.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Including but not limited to: connecting devices; motor windings, transformer windings; normally-open, normally-closed, change-over and delayed contacts; push-buttons; fuses, circuit-breakers, relays, contactors, overload elements, thermal relays; indicating instruments; mechanically, temperature, and time actuated switches, pressure switches.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Electronic drawing symbols are identified from diagrams and explained in terms of their function and relationship with other components.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Including but not limited to: resistor, inductor, capacitor; relays, contactors, overload elements, thermal relays; indicating instruments; diodes; triodes; triac; integrated circuits; micro-processor.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Control circuit terminology is defined according to industry norms.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Normal position, energised position, normally-open, normally-closed, change-over and delayed contacts, manual, automatic, semi-automatic.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Cam charts are identified and explained in terms of their function and relationship with other diagrams and related components.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Identify the purpose and features of diagrams used in appliance servicing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Purpose and key features of circuit diagrams (schematics) are identified according to manufacturers' specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Purpose and key features of wiring diagrams are identified according to manufacturers' specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Purpose and key features of block diagrams are identified in accordance with manufacturers' specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Purpose and key features of cam charts are identified in accordance with manufacturers' specifications.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Use diagrams to explain the operation of an electrical appliance and identify faults in given situations.
    OUTCOME RANGE
  • Circuit schematic, wiring diagram, block diagram, cam charts;
  • Any appliance for which any of or combinations of the four types of diagrams are significant.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Circuit operation is explained logically, with reference to the purpose of each component and the time sequence of events for full cycle of operation of the appliance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Drawings are correctly selected to relate to the appliance or circuit under review. Additional charts or diagrams are selected and used to provide appropriate detail for the task at hand.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Positions and components on the drawing are correctly related to positions and components in the circuit or appliance, and vice versa.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Consequences of incorrect interpretation of drawings are described in terms of potential impact on subsequent fault finding, repairs, maintenance, safety and appliance operation.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Use diagrams and testing equipment to identify and locate faults.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Test instruments and desired settings are correctly identified according to applicable job requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The correct sequence of interpreting diagrams to trace a fault is applied according to faultfinding procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Faults are described in terms of deviations from normal operation and effect on the appliance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The corrective procedure for the diagnosed fault is described according to manufacturers' specifications.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
  • Anyone assessing a candidate against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
The following essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria. Candidates are unlikely to achieve all the specific outcomes, to the standards described in the assessment criteria, without knowledge of the listed embedded knowledge. This means that for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate's performance. Where direct assessment of knowledge is required, assessment criteria have been included in the body of the unit standard.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
