PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful to people who are called upon to minister to those who are dying, or recently bereaved, and to help them prepare for a Christian funeral.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Describe and explain the Christian understanding of death and life.
  • Investigate and describe cultural and social attitudes towards death, including the causes of death.
  • Explain the nature and meaning of funeral, vigil and memorial services in the learner's own faith tradition.
  • Assist in preparing for and in leading a funeral, vigil or memorial service in the learner's own faith community.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are assumed to be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    The different concepts of death and bereavement are described in a coherent way. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The explanation need not go into great depth. Assessment should be based on its usefulness to a person facing death or bereavement.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Christian understanding of death is linked to the experience of a person facing death or bereavement. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe cultural and social attitudes towards death, including the causes of death. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    One or more communities may be investigated, and different attitudes may be compared. The investigation may include, but not be limited to death as a result of Aids, or violence, and perceptions of death as being caused by malice (i.e. witchcraft) as opposed to natural causes.

    Explain the nature and meaning of funeral, vigil and memorial services in the learner's own faith tradition.

    The nature and meaning of funeral, vigil and memorial services are explained in accordance with the teaching of the learner's faith tradition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The nature and meaning of funeral, vigil and memorial services are explained with reference to the Christian understanding of death. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The nature and meaning of funeral, vigil and memorial services are explained with reference to the people who would be likely to participate in the service, including the bereaved, people assisting in leading the service, undertakers and others. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Assist in preparing for and in leading a funeral, vigil or memorial service in the learner's own faith community.
