PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner is capable of:
Integrating knowledge and understanding of load bearing scaffolding and related applications with skills for planning, organising and controlling a range of activities associated with the erection, alteration/repositioning and dismantling of load bearing scaffolding.
The competencies contained in this unit standard extend beyond the mechanical completion of tasks associated with load bearing scaffolding operations and contribute towards the professional development of the learner by equipping him/her with enhanced knowledge and skills for the effective supervision of load bearing scaffolding operations that are carried out in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and Regulations for work conducted at heights well above ground level and industry requirements for cost-effective and quality workmanship completed within prescribed deadlines.
This unit standard further contributes to socio-economic transformation in that learners will be able to undergo RPL-assessment and receive recognition for previous learning and experience, thereby enhancing the employability and career prospects of learners within the Civil Engineering Construction field. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this unit standard:
  • Load bearing scaffolding includes but is not limited to: seating stands, public access decks, Formwork and Falsework, temporary structural supports, multiple platforms, out rigger scaffolding, pavement gantries
  • Relevant sections contained in the latest edition of SABS 0295 (Part 2) associated with load bearing scaffolding include but are not limited to: Ordinary scaffolds and special scaffolds (type specific e.g. interlocking towers, standard access, load bearing, cantilever scaffolding)
  • Site risk assessment includes but is not limited to: the use of equipment for lifting materials to required heights, the use of ropes for pulling up materials on the outside of structures, erection of temporary public protection and barricading

  • Load bearing scaffolding is classified as scaffolding that supports loads of more than 240 kilograms/sq m
  • The Load Bearing scaffolding Team Leader shall only be appointed in writing to lead a load bearing scaffolding team once he has completed the training required in SABS 085 Ed. 3 16.2.5.1, i.e. Learners will have demonstrated competence in basic inspection of ordinary access scaffolds and leading various teams of access scaffolding erectors under various construction site conditions
  • The high and often fatal risks associated with work conducted at heights well above ground level necessitates that learners fulfill the following criteria contained in SABS 085 Ed. 3 16.2.5.2 prior to attempting this unit standard and,
    His/her total access scaffolding experience exceeds two years and six months.
  • Due to the fact that SABS 0295 (Part 2) and Construction Regulations are still not published, changes to this unit standard can be expected
