PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons who are responsible for the provision of primary emergency care for bleeding (haemorrhage) and wounds. Persons credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify the different types of wounds.
  • Demonstrate the basic knowledge pertaining to the signs and symptoms of shock related to bleeding.
  • Provide emergency intervention for the control of bleeding and wounds.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The credit calculations are based on the assumption that the learners are already able to read, write at NQF level 1 or equivalent.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify the different types of wounds. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Basic knowledge of the skin and circulatory system is explained, in terms of the anatomical and physiological composition of the body. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Circulatory system must include: blood vessels, layers of the skin.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The different types of wounds are explained in accordance with accepted medical practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Types of wounds must include:
  • Lacerations
  • Incisions
  • Peppered/open wounds
  • Punctured wounds
  • Burns

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The use of primary emergency care equipment is demonstrated in accordance with accepted primary emergency care practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Emergency equipment should include First aid dressings assorted sizes, tourniquet's, bandages, specialised cover dressings for burns, transportation.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate basic knowledge pertaining to the signs and symptoms of shock related to bleeding. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The signs and symptoms of shock related to bleeding are described in terms of medical practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Shock must include neurogenic and surgical.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The technique in controlling bleeding, related to wounds is explained in accordance with accepted first aid and medical practice and type of wound. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Technique must include direct pressure (pressure bandages), indirect pressure, tourniquet.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The potential of identifying signs and symptoms and related complications pertaining to. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Concealed, unconcealed bleeding and shock are explained in terms of accepted medical practice. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Provide emergency treatment for the control of bleeding and wounds. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The treatment for specific wounds is demonstrated in accordance with accepted first aid / primary emergency care and medical practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The intervention for specific wounds must include: Eye injuries, Bleeding from the ear, Penetrating chest wounds, Penetrating wounds, Open fractures/ dislocations, Burns.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The primary emergency care treatment is applied to promote recovery and to prevent deterioration of the condition of the injured person. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The complications related to the use of incorrect treatment in the control of bleeding and wounds are explained in terms of related condition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The use of personal protective equipment during primary emergency care treatment is demonstrated and explained, according to preventative health protocols. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Treatment reports are completed in accordance with medico legal requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures. 

    UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    Essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria. Candidates are unlikely to achieve all the specific outcomes, to the standards described in the assessment criteria, without knowledge of the listed embedded knowledge. This means that for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate's performance. Where direct assessment of knowledge is required, assessment criteria have been included in the body of the unit standard.

Note: The ability of the candidate to use visual and language skills to report on first aid treatment will indicate his/her effectiveness to communicate information in the mode of oral or written reports.

    Use science and technology effectively and critically showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others. Note: The ability of the candidate to use science and technology effectively will contribute towards safeguarding the environment and health of others.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation. Note: The ability of the candidate to identify and refer anomalous conditions to an authorised person, confirms understand that a specific observation, inference, action or decision can have an interrelated effect. 

    UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA 
    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, direct, authentic, sufficient, systematic, open and consistent.
