PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
  • To inspect and maintain electrical panels used to feed power to and control air-conditioning, refrigeration or ventilation plants
  • To ensure that panels will operate safely and correctly and that no loose connection will cause damage.
  • To replace any faulty electrical components.

    Work site instructions:
    Job cards, work requests and maintenance schedules.
    Cleaning tools:
    Blowers, vacuum cleaners, extension leads, brushes, waste, rags, cleaning solvents.
    Personal protective equipment:
    Overalls, aprons, safety glasses, safety shoes, face shields, masks.
    Electrical testing instruments:
    Voltmeter, ammeter, multimeters, insulation resistance testers and line testers.

    Confirmation that panel is isolated and locked out as per work site procedures is obtained.

    Panel enclosures, hinges, locking devices and weather seals are visually inspected for defects. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Panel is cleaned using approved cleaning materials and solvents as per work place standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Correct and safe use of cleaning materials and equipment as per safety standard is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    No damage occurred to components and/or cleaning equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    All electrical control panel labels are checked. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Presence of electrical wiring diagram and operating instructions is checked. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    Appropriate use of personal protective equipment is demonstrated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Inspect and maintain electrical circuitry in electrical control panels.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Confirmation that electrical control panel is isolated and locked out as per work site procedures is obtained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All connections are checked for tightness, proper contact and correct size. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Electrical control panel components are blown out or vacuumed using the appropriate equipment and safety procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    No damage occurred to components and/or cleaning equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    All indication lights, components and instruments are checked for proper working order. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Faulty components are identified and replaced 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Sequence operation of all components is checked and found to be as per the operating instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    Any changes made to the electrical control panel are recorded on the wiring diagram and the operating instructions.

    Conclude the inspection and maintenance of electrical panels.

    Electrical control panel is re-energised and locked. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All defects and suspected faults are recorded and reported in line with work site instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    All defective components are correctly disposed of in accordance with work site instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The cleaning solvents are properly sealed/closed and correctly stored to prevent hazardous fumes, substance spillage and risk of fire.

    All equipment is returned to the store as per work site housekeeping instructions.

    Job card and maintenance report are completed as per work site instructions.

    Relevant persons are informed that the work is completed.

    Any person learning towards the National Certificate in Air-conditioning, Refrigeration and Ventilation at NQF level 3 shall not work on electrical equipment or electrical control panels unless such person has been assessed competent in the unit standards on NQF levels 2 and 3 involving electrical work on such equipment or control panels and feels confident and comfortable to carry out such work.
