PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is in the core category of the NQF Level 3 National Certificate in CTFL Mechanician Processes. Learners who are assessed competent with this unit standard are able to describe waste reduction practices, identify, measure and apply waste reduction practices and take the necessary action in an environmentally friendly manner. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners will have attained an ABET Level 4 qualification or equivalent qualification at NQFLevel 1. Industry compliant waste reduction practices, industry specific waste reduction standards and codes of practice. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
Waste reduction will include the following terms in the learners context:
  • Grease.
  • Lubricants.
  • Consumables.
  • Spare parts.
  • Process materials.
  • Energy - include examples i.e. compressed air, electricity, steam etc.
  • Recycling possibilities including leather, rubber, oil, water, electricity and steam relevant to the CTFL sector.

    The demonstration confirms, according to company waste requirements, the application of the basic procedures for taking corrective action to reduce waste. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The application of making corrective adjustments is such that it fosters teamwork and eliminates conflict and ties in with company policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Action is taken timeously to maintain waste levels where company waste requirements are adhered to at all times. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The demonstration confirms compliance with waste reduction practices, policies and procedures.
