PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Diagnose and explain complex operational faults experienced in refrigeration installations, rectify these and/or propose corrective action to be taken. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that people starting to learn towards this unit standard have already proven competence in:
  • Identifying, using and maintaining refrigeration trade tools.
  • Explaining the operation of actual vapour compression refrigeration systems.
  • Identifying and explaining the operation of refrigerant control devices.
  • Identifying refrigeration plant operation and safety devices.
  • Identifying, using and maintaining electrical testing tools used in the trade of refrigeration.
  • Interpret electrical diagrams. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Plant or domestic refrigerator or freezer under-performance due to control or component malfunction or maladjustment (e.g. broken or leaking valve, condensing pressure control set wrong, etc.)
    Including reasons for and corrective action to be taken for non-standard operating conditions (e.g. too high or too low suction pressure, head pressure, oil pressure, superheat or sub-cooling, freeze-ups, compressor burn-outs, loosing oil, etc.
